The National Assembly is to henceforth present NEITI Industry reports for open debate during plenary sessions.
The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara gave the assurances in Abuja while receiving the new International Chair of EITI John Fredrik Reinfeldt.
The assurances by the National Assembly followed a request by the Acting Executive Secretary, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji on the importance of open debate on the report as the part of the roles of the National Assembly under the NEITI Act 2007.
Both the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House, requested the NEITI Secretariat to ensure that copies of the NEITI reports are henceforth presented to the leadership through the relevant committees as soon as they are ready. The two leaders conveyed to the visiting EITI Chair, the commitments and support of the National Assembly to the EITI implementation in Nigeria.
He stressed the role of the legislature in the process and urged the National Assembly to take up its rightful roles as provided by the EITI rules and the NEITI law.
The Chair of the EITI was accompanied on the visit to Nigeria and the National Assembly by the Deputy Head of the EITI Secretariat, Eddy Rich.
